To make this year a little different, I thought I should start talking about things other than just book reviews and book tags. Because a constant stream of those can get really boring, really fast. So today, I’ll tell you about something else I love – music.
Some people are musical people. They like indie bands, they can play twelve different instruments, they like bands ‘before they were cool’. Some people follow only the popular stuff, and are always up to date with the hottest music trends. I’ve always been a strange mixture of both. I don’t exactly have my own music taste, I just have a mixture of all my friends. But I finally, finally, have found a whole bunch of new music that I’m in love with.
Through watching Tyler Oakley’s YouTube videos, I stumbled upon this cute as frick kid named Troye Sivan. His YouTube videos are funny, with a bit of seriousness thrown in. I went through a phase of watching every single one of his videos, and once I ran out of those, I checked out his music. Namely, his new album, Blue Neighbourhood.
I. Am. In. Love.
Okay, a lot of his songs do sound the same. But his lyrics send shivers up my spine every time I hear them. My current favourite is For Him, but this changes all the time. Even writing this now, I know I’ll probably have a different favourite by the time this post goes up.
She sings the song Here, which I first listened to a few months ago. From that moment, I decided this girl was my new idol. Every single lyric resonated with me, and it made it okay to not be into parties, something I get mad at myself about.
From there, I checked out her album Four Pink Walls, and promptly became obsessed with Seventeen. I’m really into basically all of her music, but those two songs are my favourites.
Spotify, YouTube (both to volume 4)
Oops, another YouTuber… This is a compilation from Connor Franta, full of great songs from undiscovered artists. Lots of them are quite slow, and ‘artsy’. I don’t know if that choice of word will make sense to anyone but me, but that’s how I think of them… It’s really nice to hear some artists I didn’t know existed, and Connor has really good taste in music.
From his most recent Common Culture (4), my favourite is Runaway by Aurora.
Oddly, this guy is a French singer, so I have no idea what he’s saying. But his songs are so catchy anyway! When I went to America as part of Tempe Sister Cities, I met a whole bunch of French people with fabulous taste in music, and they introduced me to this guy. It’s really interesting reading the translations, but generally I just like dance and sing in terrible French
The Cat Empire
I’ve been into this band for a while now, and their music still wows me. They’re a ska band, which is basically full of sax and other cool instruments. I can’t explain it very well, so go google it! My friends introduced me to this band, and I haven’t been able to stop listening since.
Unfortunately, Spotify doesn’t have all of their songs, so I know I’m probably missing out on some amazing stuff. My favourites of theirs are Hello (mostly because of the sexy way he says it), and Sly. The Cat Empire are the perfect band to get up and dance to!
What have you been listening to recently? What would you recommend? And do you want to fangirl over any of these with me??
