My Latest Obsession: Heathers, the Musical

Have you heard of Heathers, the off-Broadway musical? If you haven’t, the plot of it is pretty hard to explain. It starts off very Mean Girls-esque, starring the three goddesses Heather, Heather, and Heather, with Veronica trying to become part of the group. Then, Cute Boy J.D. comes along, and… well, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but he certainly changes the feel of it. My friend Elly introduced me to it, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since.

As per every musical, act 1 is a massive party, and act 2 is death and destruction and sadness. But man oh man, it’s the best sort of party. Big Fun is one of my favourites, because it’s such a JAM to dance to. And Candy Store and Dead Girl Walking have so Dead Girl Walking.gifmuch sex appeal and sassiness, I die every. Single. Time. To be honest, some of the songs don’t flow very well when you just listen to the soundtrack; J.D.’s story is a bit hard to follow! But having watched a bootleg of the musical (they’re everywhere online!) I can appreciate the soundtrack on it’s own. Act 2 has a whole heap of bangers too, but in a very different way. Sad ballads that’ll make you cry, a couple of dance-along jams, and a whole lot of tension. The last few songs have my heart racing, and I’m so stressed about everything that’s about to happen, even though I know exactly what’s going on. There’s certain lines (bang bang bang, “you’re truly a Heather”) that make me want to SCREAM. But, like, in the best of ways. You should probably watch it first, though, it isn’t the sort of soundtrack you can just go and listen to!

The story is pretty messed up, in the best possible way. J.D. is straight up psycho, and I love every second of it. Veronica is relatably flawed, the Heather’s are bitchy in a way Candy Store.gifthat makes you fall in love with them, and Martha is the purest soul you will ever meet. Like I said, it’s a hard plot to explain, but I think it’s better not knowing much going into it. I was genuinely shocked by every twist and turned, jumped at every gun shot (ooh, spoiler?), and was near tears in all the right places. For a show that never quite made it to Broadway, it packs just as much emotion as any decent movie I’ve seen.

The one thing I’m not sure about is the movie. Is that any good? I’ve heard a mix of things! Maybe I just need to stick to the actors I know and love… Any sort of Heathers I can get in my life, though, I need.

Have you seen/heard this musical? What did you think? Have I convinced you that it’ll be a blessing to your life?
