If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen this adorable photo of my Brownies (small Girl Guides), and me saying how sad I am to leave them. Over the weekend, our group and a couple of others went on a trip to Somes Island, a sanctuary that’s a 10 minute boat ride away. As a Wellington kid, of course I’d been there before, but it’s a completely different experience going when you’re older with a group of kids.
There are no boat pictures, because of one girl being absolutely terrified, and another worrying she was going to get seasick. Yes, it was only ten minutes. KIDS. Anyway, the first picture I took was of a heartbreaking memorial for everyone who had died on the island, back when it was a quarantine for English settlers who were hoping to come to New Zealand. Some of these people were just children, and I found it absolutely heartbreaking.
Then comes a whole heap of learning photos, with the girls gathered around the man giving us a tour, or looking at all the things they found fascinating. It’s actually really interesting watching them learn, as weird as that sounds. We were continously looking for the blue tags, which meant there was a penguin nest nearby, and they were full of questions about all the animals that lived there, like the disgusting wetas.
The best bit was that we were climbing up a hill, on an island, so we got some gorgeous views. I really do love living so close to the sea, because it’s beautiful, and these views were even better than usual!
And yes, I got made fun of by one of the girls for taking this dramatic picture.
The thing about a sanctuary is there are animals all over the place. We’re in New Zealand, so no, nothing like a lion wandering around. It’s more this adorable duckling, gross insects, that sort of thing. There were some learning shots about the thing, but I think the things themselves are interesting all on their own!
Then, yes, another ferry trip on the way back. Again, no photos, it’s very stressful trying to keep 15 girls in check!
Where was the last place you adventured to? Do you want to come adventure with me here?
