Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. They tell us what to write our top ten for, and we do! This week…
BOOKS FEATURING CHARACTERS WHO HAVE GOOD FAMILIES
I’m sick of families conviniently disappearing so characters can go on adventures. So these families actually CARE
- Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. The Weasley family. They’re so involved in each other’s lives, Molly religiously makes them those sweaters, and they all seem to get on so well. Yeah, the adventures go on at school. But Molly finds out what they do, and punishes them
- All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. Violet went to her father when she was worried about Finch. And they actually went out and tried to do something about it. AMAZING
- The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. Okay, yes, it’s because they’re all involved in the adventure. And while her mum isn’t the most responsible, she does try to warn her away from things (or people, like Gansey)
- The Walsh series by Marian Keyes. These sisters get on so well, and their parents adore them. When they get in trouble (divorced, drug addict, jobless, homeless, etc), their parents have no problem with taking them in
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. He has a mental illness, and so, as you’d expect, his dad looks after him. He does escape a few times, but for the most part him and his dad talk about whatever is going wrong. Also, I HATE this picture, but that is what those two do
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I didn’t like the book, but they are the epitome of a good family. They get on so well, and they’d do anything for each other
- Driftwood by Cathy Cassidy. With so many foster kids, you’d expect an involved family. And they are! They genuinely worry when their kids go missing. Revolutionary, I know
- Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. Meggie’s dad is the one that gets her on the adventures in the first place. Her mother is conviniently missing, and Mo does his best to make sure Meggie doesn’t do the same
- My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I haven’t read this (I KNOW), but according to my mum her mum is very involved. Which you’d expect, with cancer. And I have seen the bit where she shaves her head to support her daughter. I don’t know if that happens in the book, but I thought it was so nice
- Bridge to Terabthia by Katherine Paterson. Yeah, his dad is a bit of a tosser. But by the end, with that thing that Jesse doesn’t like (you know, THE THING), he actually cares. It’s so heartbreaking, and I’m glad he had his dad there to look after him
So, there are my ten! What did you pick for this week? What family do you wish you were part of? Have you noticed the irritating lack of parents?
Yay, there are some amazing families on your list. I love the Weasley family. Great choices.

I’ve been reading Pretty Little Liars, and they’re absolutely horrible parents! Thanks 🙂

Dude, thats excatly what I think when I watch the show! They’re never around and when they are we don’t really hear from them, you know? It doesn’t really seem realistic

It’s SO ANNOYING. And I’ve just got up to the bit with Emily’s scandal (I hope you know the bit I mean). OhmyGod, her parents are awful! It’s good that they’re there, but they should have been A LOT nicer about it!!

Yes, the thing with the Maya? And at the swimming meet? (this is so stressful, I don’t want either of us to spoil it!)

This was a creative twist, I’m also tired of the missing/deceased parents and evil step-family. I adore the Weasley family, they’re awesome!

Authors need to realise that families aren’t like that in real life! I love the Weasleys too 🙂

Great list! Weasley family definitely belongs here! Bridge to Terabithia was so sad. I cry every time I watch the movie. As for My Sister’s Keeper, I’m a little wishy washy for reasons that I can’t say because you haven’t read it haha.

The Weasleys are a great family! I love My Sisters Keeper, but I’m a little dubious about this, because I have read it and the family relationships are little more complicated. You should definitely read that book, it’s a great one. I love Blue’s family in the Raven Boys and it’s great to see a family being involved in what their kids are doing. Great list!
